WAODS Witness World Premier
Five WAODS, including the Society's Chairman Barbara Mews, recently travelled to the Portuguese island of Madeira to see the world amateur premier of Boublil and Schönberg's show 'Les Misérables' - the world's longest running musical.
The director of the show, Ray Jeffery, produced shows for WAODS for 27 years; he also starred in 'Les Misérables' as the comic lead - 'Monsieur Thénardier'. Ray has directed, and appeared, in several shows for the Madeira Amateur Dramatic Society, who are based in the island's capital Funchal, since 1999.
Ray is no stranger to 'Les Misérables'. He was one of the first directors in the UK to be given the rights to the school's edition. Ray remembers the first time he saw the show in London - the first week of its transfer to the Palace Theatre from the National. He totally fell in love with it and was hooked as a 'Les Mis' fan. That was 23 years ago (he insists he was just 10 years old at the time!!) but little did he imagine that he would be given the honour of being the first director in the world to present it with an amateur society, which is testament to Ray's talent, hard work and skill - attributes he has passed on to his protégéé and long-time assistant with WAODS - Barbara Mews.
